Canberra, June 1, 2025 — The Australian government has formally urged China to provide greater transparency regarding its “extraordinary” military build-up, citing concerns over regional security and strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles described China’s recent surge in defense capabilities as “unprecedented” and emphasized the need for open dialogue to avoid miscalculations in the region. “It is vital for all nations to understand the intent behind such a rapid expansion of military power,” Marles said during a press briefing.
This comes amid growing tensions between China and several Western nations, with Australia increasingly aligning itself with partners such as the United States, Japan, and India through defense initiatives like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and AUKUS.
Experts note that China’s military investments include advanced missile systems, aircraft carriers, cyber capabilities, and space-based defense technologies. While China maintains that its military developments are defensive in nature, Australia and other nations remain cautious about the long-term implications.
The Australian government has reiterated its commitment to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, calling for increased transparency, mutual respect, and adherence to international law. The request for clarification is expected to be raised in upcoming diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
